 Ken
Smith is a Deputy Sheriff for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
He is currently assigned to the Court Services Bureau, downtown courts.
He has been with the Department for 15 years. Prior to joining the Department,
Ken served 3 years in the US Army as a tactical communications mechanic
and has a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Administration.
Ken is 39 years old and single against his wishes. (Whether it's his
better judgment is yet to be seen!) He has been playing drums since he
was 10 years old when he started playing in the school band on snare drum.
When he was 15 he began playing on a 5 piece kit and would eventually end
up owning a 1982 Royal Midnight Blue Tama drum set, bought with his high
school graduation money. This kit is FINALLY fully restored with some new
hardware and cymbals. Even now, there's no guarantee Ben and Mike will
let him play it other than at home in "the music room".
He immediately began playing with an ad-hoc high school band but stopped
when he went overseas in the Army in 1983. While in Germany, Ken played
in a band called "Showdown", comprised of other military personnel and
German nationals. This band played many gigs for American style rock-and-roll
loving German and American fans, both on and off base, and featured cover
tunes as well as many original tunes. After his stint in the Army, Ken
returned to San Diego and hooked up with his old band mates from high school
and played mainly garage/studio type performances under the band name of
"Spectre". This band broke up in the early 1990's and aside from playing
around with his brother's garage band, Ken stored his drums so he would
have to massively clean them years later. (See year long restoration project!)
In June of 2001 Ken learned of the band venture being spearheaded by
Ben, Mike and PK, however, at that time they already had three drummers.
Somehow he ended up singing a few tunes for them and (despite the *constant*
threat of being replaced) he attempts to keep the band laughing during
practice (hence the nick name SPAZBOY).
Since joining "Code 3 Cover" Ken has routinely attempted to keep the
cables hooked up, keep the sound system running smooth (hence the nickname
MacGyver), faked a couple of harmonica solos and will occasionally sing
in tune during a lead or back up, all the while complaining he has no formal
vocal training (and it shows!)
His favorite musical influences range from rock to R&B to Jazz,
with such bands as Rush, Journey, Saga, Jean Luc Ponty, Zapp & Roger
(old school!) The Police (go figure), Metallica, Queensryche, Van Halen,
Dream Theatre, Earth Wind & Fire, Bobby Caldwell, Tangerine Dream,
Surf Punks, Jerky Boys, and many others.
His hobbies (outside of the band) include skiing, scuba, digital video
editing, flying helicopters, RC cars, paintball, praying for & recruiting
groupies, Playstation 2, home theater, taking care of 3 cats, anything
sci-fi, dragging his tired behind to the gym, burning audio cd's, procrastinating
bass lessons from PK, and grooming the next Mrs. Smith via
Southwest Airlines!
Ken uses a Shure UT series UHF Vocal Artist wireless microphone set
up, with a Shure SM58 mic, assorted "Blues Harp" Harmonicas, a dremel tool,
a Digitech Vocalist Performer Harmony Processor (anything helps!), a Boss
DD-3 Digital Delay pedal, a Digitech 16 Voice Chorus Pedal, assorted extension
cords, Mike's congas, and PK's and Melba's vocals to cover up any flaws! |
